The Gap Between What Teams Expect and What They Get
A HealthTech team decides to add wearable support to their fitness app or health tracking platform. The initial scope feels manageable: integrate Apple Health, show users their steps and heart rate, ship it. Two weeks becomes six. The six becomes twelve. Somewhere in there, the team learns things about HealthKit permissions, background delivery limitations, iOS version inconsistencies, and Health Connect's different behavior on Samsung devices that weren't in any documentation they read before starting.
This pattern is common enough to have a name internally: the first device problem. One device is tractable. Wearable health products depend on data from hardware the team doesn't control, through operating systems that change on Apple and Google's schedule, from devices that behave inconsistently with each other even when reporting the same metrics. Fitness tracker app development is less a coding problem and more an ongoing systems problem. Teams that have shipped production wearable products know the failure modes before they hit them. Where the Complexity Actually Lives
Device heterogeneity
Heart rate is heart rate. Except that Garmin reports it differently from Oura, which reports it differently from Whoop, which reports it differently from the Apple Watch. Not in magnitude, but in sampling frequency, timestamp granularity, unit conventions, and what's included in the data payload. Building a health monitoring app that works correctly across multiple devices requires a data model that accounts for all of these differences and normalizes them before any feature logic runs.
Teams that integrate devices one at a time, against a fixed schema, find themselves refactoring the foundation when the third or fourth provider doesn't fit the model they built for the first two.
Background sync behavior
On iOS, HealthKit background delivery is not a simple subscription. The system decides when to deliver data based on battery state, usage patterns, and priorities that Apple doesn't publish. On Android, Health Connect has different behavior depending on manufacturer. Sync that works reliably in development breaks intermittently in production. Tracking down why requires understanding the operating system's resource management, not just the SDK.
Provider API stability
Device vendors update APIs on their own schedule. Garmin has changed webhook formats. Oura has deprecated API versions with relatively short notice. Whoop has modified OAuth scope requirements. Each change requires someone to detect it (ideally before it breaks production), test the impact, and deploy a fix. For teams that built integrations as one-time work, each provider change becomes an unplanned incident.
Data accuracy and health scoring
A wearable app development project that stops at data collection misses the part that users actually interact with: the numbers, scores, and recommendations. HRV of 42ms means nothing to a user. "Your recovery is 12% below your average for Monday" means something. Building the interpretation layer correctly requires understanding both the signal (what does the sensor measure, and how reliably) and the population context (what range is normal for this user, this age group, this activity level).
Generic algorithms produce numbers that look plausible. Scientifically grounded algorithms produce numbers that are accurate. For health products, the difference matters to users and, in regulated contexts, to compliance.
What Depth of Expertise Looks Like
There's a practical difference between a team that has integrated one or two wearable APIs and a team that has worked across all the major providers at protocol level.
The latter knows which Garmin device categories have different data schemas and why. They know which HealthKit data types have unreliable background delivery and how to handle the gaps. They know that Oura's readiness score and Whoop's recovery score are not the same metric despite appearing to measure the same thing. They know what a normalized HRV schema looks like that doesn't break when a new provider gets added six months later.

Working With Your Existing Setup
You don't have to switch platforms to work with Momentum. If you're already on a SaaS wearable platform or using direct vendor APIs, we build on top of what you have.
The approach is the same regardless: architecture that doesn't create lock-in. If you're on a SaaS platform today and want to move to self-hosted infrastructure at some point, that should be a scoped project, not a rebuild of everything we delivered. We build the features, health scores, and data pipelines in a way where switching the underlying infrastructure layer requires swapping one component, not rewriting the product.
That also means you're never pressured to adopt Open Wearables. If your current setup works and the economics make sense, there's no architectural reason to change it. If the economics shift (scaling costs, compliance requirements, customization needs), the path to Open Wearables is already clear.
